Understanding Exam Types

BUV’s assessment methods reflect UK university practices, adapted to the local context.

Understand what to expect and how to prepare.

Closed-Book Examinations

Purpose: Assess recall, comprehension, and application under pressure.

Structure: Short answers, MCQs, essays — all from memory.

Preparation Tip: Use flashcards, self-quizzing, and active recall techniques.

Open-Book Examinations

Purpose: Test analysis, problem-solving, and application — not just memorization.

Structure: Case studies, problem sets, or essays using permitted materials.

Preparation Tip: Organise notes, highlight key theories, and practice applying knowledge quickly.

Practical / Viva Examinations

Purpose: Demonstrate skills or defend work orally.

Structure:

  • Practical: Perform a task, experiment, or software use.
  • Viva: Oral Q&A with examiners about your project.
Preparation Tip: Rehearse tasks; practice explaining ideas clearly and answering tough questions.

Other Exam-like Assessments

  • Timed Essays/Reports: Write under invigilated conditions — combines writing skills with exam pressure.
  • Online Assessments: Timed quizzes or problem-solving tasks completed digitally.
  • Case Studies: May include timed presentation or defence components.
